MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The IU East women's volleyball team erased a 2-0 deficit to defeat Madonna 3-2 before sweeping Rochester Christian 3-0 to conclude the Mount Vernon Tournament.
The Red Wolves went 3-1 on the opening weekend.
IU East came out sluggish against Madonna dropping the first two sets 25-17, 25-19. Trailing in the third set, 5-3, the Red Wolves went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-5 lead. They would lead the rest of the set as Jessica Swimm tallied a kill for the last point in the set.
The Red Wolves almost didn't get to a fifth set. Madonna held a late 17-12 lead before Swimm tallied another kill to start a huge 9-4 run to tie the set up 21-21. Both teams exchanged points but the Red Wolves would finally take their first lead in the set at 23-22 thanks to a kill from Sheridan Phillips. Swimm capped the comeback with another kill.
In the race to 15, IU East started off how the ended the fourth set, running out to a 4-0 run that required a timeout from the Madonna coach to stop the bleeding. The timeout seemed to help the Crusaders as they went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-4 lead.
Tied 8-8, the Red Wolves would go on a 7-3 run to claim the match. Phillips and Reece Shirley tallied back-to-back kills for the win.
Swimm led the Red Wolves with a game-high 21 kills. Reece Shirley added 13 kills to go along with 22 assists and 10 digs. Aislyn Hogan had 18 assists.
In the second game, the Red Wolves had little difficulty with Rochester Christian.
IU East breezed in the first set, leading from start to finish. The second set was a little more difficult as the Red Wolves struggled offensively and faced a late deficit. With the set tied 23-23, the Red Wolves were able to overcome scoring the next two points. Phillips and Tia Cooper accounted for the last two points.
Shirley led the team with 13 kills. She also had 18 assists. Lauren Uhte led the team with 24 assists.
Another late tie described the third set. The Red Wolves were able to score the last three points.
The Red Wolves will be in the Onset Tournament next weekend in Fort Wayne.
