Red Wolves Defeat Alice Lloyd
RICHMOND, Ind. – The IU East women's volleyball team won their 11th straight game on Friday night as they upended Alice Lloyd in three sets, 25-3, 25-17, 25-15.
The Red Wolves improved to 20-6 overall and 12-1 in conference play. They also improved their home record to a perfect 9-0.
In the first set, the Red Wolves held the Eagles to just three points. They started off the set with an 8-0 run, followed by a 6-1 run. Winning 17-3, IU East scored the last eight points to clinch the first in convincing fashion.
The Eagles, however, responded in the second set scoring the first three points of the set. The Red Wolves committed two attack errors and a ball-handling error. Trailing 7-3, the Red Wolves went on a 6-0 run to take the 9-7 lead. The Eagles would take the lead after three straight points but another large run gave IU East the lead for good. Teah Barrett Matthews started off the run with a kill and Payton Schultheis added three kills of her own in the 7-0 run. The two teamed up for the last two points of the set as the Red Wolves took a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
In the third, the Red Wolves were able to limit the consecutive points for the Eagles. Alice Lloyd didn't score more than two points in a row in the set to keep their upset bid grounded.
Schultheis led the team with nine kills. Tia Cooper followed with seven, tied with fellow Teah Barrett Matthews. Reece Shirley added 24 assists and Lauren Uhte had 12.
The Red Wolves will look to keep it rolling on Saturday as they host Oakland City at 2 p.m. on Lingle Court.
