Volleyball: IU East Advances in RSC Championships
RICHMOND, Ind. - The Indiana University East volleyball team overcame a sluggish start to post a 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 win over WVU Tech in the River States Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
With the victory, No. 2 IU East (26-7) advances to the semifinals to face No. 3 Oakland City (17-9) on Friday, Nov. 10. The match begins at 7:30 p.m. No. 7 seed WVU Tech finishes 15-17. The Mighty Oaks defeated No. 6 Shawnee State 25-22, 25-16, 18-25, 25-17 in the quarterfinal round.
Top seed IU Kokomo (30-3) will host the semifinals and Saturday's championship tilt after a 25-11, 25-16, 25-16 victory over No. 8 IU Southeast in the quarterfinals.
In Friday's other semifinal, the host Cougars entertain the University of Rio Grande (20-10) at 5 p.m. The No. 5 RedStorm beat No. 4 St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 22-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19, 15-5 to earn their ticket to the semifinals.
After dropping the opening set against WVU Tech, the Red Wolves fell behind in the second before bouncing back late to grab the victory. IU East was able to hold off the Golden Bears in the final two sets for the win.
Jessica Swimm led the Red Wolves with 22 kills as Brooke Lepper finished with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Reece Shirley dished out 51 assists, while recording 10 digs. Ella Bickel had a match-high 28 digs.
