Tennis: IU East Spilts with Brescia as Red Wolves take Women's Match
OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Indiana University East tennis teams competed at Brescia University as the women's squad won 4-3 for the Red Wolves second victory of the season, while the men fell 7-0 to the Bearcats on Friday, March 28.
The IU East women are now 2-4 and 1-1 in the River States Conference with the men at 1-5 and 0-1.
IU East was able to steal the women's contest by besting the Bearcats in singles play. Lexi Swauger and Chantelle Mapondera both won 6-0, 6-0 in their singles matches. Kerstin Ellis also had a great match, winning 6-1, 6-0.
With the contest tied 3-3, Gracie Helms was battling at No. 2 singles in what was the deciding match. After losing the first set, Helms battled back by winning the second set before taking the deciding 10-point tiebreaker. With her victory, the Red Wolves clinched the match.
In men's action, the Red Wolves battled but fell short. At No. 1 singles, Kyle Hollingsworth lost the first set but came back to win the second set. However, Hollingsworth fell short in the deciding 10-point tiebreaker.
In a very similar match at No. 2 singles, Sachin Vanaraja also battled back to force a deciding 10-point tiebreaker but also fell short. Both contests were hard fought battles between great players.
The Red Wolves will be on short rest heading into Oakland City University to take on the Mighty Oaks on Saturday, March 29. Due to the weather, the official start time of the match has not been set.
