Red Wolves Lead IU East Invitational After Day 1

RICHMOND, Ind. - The Indiana University East women's golf team is on top of the after the opening round of the IU East Fall Invitational at Highland Lake Golf Course on Friday, Aug. 30.

The Red Wolves posted a team score of 314, which was just ahead Oakland City University's 317.

"We are in a dog fight here," IU East coach Billy Mullin said. "It's going to take everyone fighting again tomorrow to close this out."

Saturday's final round with a shotgun start gets underway at 9 a.m.

Trine University is third at 320 followed by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 327, Hanover College 329, IU Kokomo 337, Roane State 339, Alma College 346, Defiance College 390 and Earlham College 430.

"Another extremely hot day, there was a lot of really good golf played today," Mullin said. "I'm not sure if the IU East women’s golf program has ever had all five scores in the 70s like we did today."

Jalyn Bruns and Katie Craig both carded 78s to lead the Red Wolves to tie for seventh. Trine's Rylee Smith is first on the leaderboard at 74.

"It was a pretty good day overall," Bruns said. "I had some good birdie putts on the back nine, but I wasn't able to get off the bogey train on the front."

"I was really pleased to see how the rest of my teammates finished," Bruns added. "Not every team can have five girls shoot in the 70s in one round. I have no doubt that we will keep it going tomorrow."

Jackson's score of 79 was the best of her college career.

"Overall, I was pleased with my performance," Jackson said. "My putting kept me in it again and my irons gave me many opportunities."

"As a team we did great with many girls shooting their collegiate personal bests," Jackson continued. "Tomorrow is a new day and we have to keep the energy up."

Sophia Curry and Liv Sanders also recorded 79s, while the individual scores were Ashlynne Osborne 84, Zoe Ogden 85 and Aurora Biava with an 89.

"I'm really proud of Lainey, Ashlynne, Zoe and Aurora for shooting their collegiate low rounds today," Mullin said. "Katie, Jalyn, Liv and Sophia all played really well and battled."
