Men's Golf: IU East Invitational Day 1

RICHMOND, Ind. - The Indiana University East men's golf squad is in fourth place after the first round of the IU East Fall Invitational on Friday, Aug. 30.

IU East's A and B teams both had a 297 after 18-holes on the Highland Lake Golf Course.

The University of Rio Grande (289), Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (295) and Earlham College (296) are in front of the Red Wolves. The other team scores were IU Kokomo 305, Alma College 307 and Defiance College 319.

"Today was a positive start to our fall season," IU East coach Jeff Williams said. "Very happy to see our younger guys step up."

Saturday's final round features a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Justin Hopkins of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is the individual leader with an opening round of 67. Zach Rutan of IU East is tied for second with four other players at 71.

The other scores for IU East were Dillon Letendre 72, Austin Shelley 72, Ethan Sunsdahl 72, Sam Firebaugh 73, Mason Hahn 75, Ryan Craig 77, Braden Tedder 77, Riley Bratton 80, Andon Ross 80 and Emiliano Tercero 81.

"Sophomore Zach Rutan’s 71 was outstanding," Williams said. "Freshman Ethan Sunsdahl carding an even par 72 in his first college round is very encouraging. I'm looking forward to seeing how we back it up tomorrow."
