RICHMOND, Ind. – Jake Johnson scored a team-high 25 points and went 7-of-10 from beyond the arc as the Red Wolves snapped a 5-game skid to defeat Rio Grande 87-76 Saturday.
Johnsons scored his 25 points after going 8-of-14 from the field. He converted on both of his free throw attempts. Ibra Athie dominated the boards grabbing 14 rebounds to go along with 22 points for a double-double.
The Red Wolves shot 53 percent from the floor. But they won the game with their free throws, hitting 21 of 25.
IU East stormed out to a 10-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game. They stretched that lead to 14-5 one minute later causing Rio Grande to call a 30-second timeout.
Athie later converted on his and-1 play with 13:27 remaining in the first to give the Red Wolves a 23-7 lead. The RedStorm, however, later attempted their comeback and only trailed one at the halftime break.
With 15:20 to go in the game, Rio Grande tied the game at 51-51, the first tie since 0-0. The Red Wolves would later retake the lead and keep it the rest of the way.
Colt Meyer scored 15 points, eight coming from the charity stripe. Antuane Allen scored 10 points coming off the bench.
The Red Wolves will travel to IU Southeast on Tuesday.
