Midway Tops Red Wolves in Offensive Struggle
MIDWAY, Ky. – Cold shooting was the story in the RSC matchup against Midway and the Red Wolves.
Both teams shot in the thirties but the Eagles were able to hold on to defeat IU East 59-55. The Red Wolves were 23-of-70 from the field and only 4-of-19 from beyond the arc. Midway was slightly better at 37 percent.
After a quick bucket from Midway, Sekou Maiga took a pass from Tobey Billups and slammed it home. A jumper from Colt Meyer and Jake Johnson gave IUE a 6-2 lead after three minutes of play. The Eagles would come back and regain the lead as both teams went back and forth until Meyer's 3-pointer with 6:13 remaining in the half. The Red Wolves would keep the lead and head into the locker room up a point at 24-23.
In the second, the Eagles would take the lead just 20 seconds into the half which also started a 9-0 run. Midway would lead the rest of the way. IUE would make it a game late. Trailing 57-50, Meyer was fouled attempting a 3-pointer. He hit all three free throws to cut the deficit to four with 2:02 left. Both offenses went cold down the stretch. In the last two minutes, each team was able to score two points. Billups was the last field goal for the Red Wolves with a second left in the game.
Meyer scored a team-high 10 points. Maiga scored four points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Johnson added nine points and five boards.
The Red Wolves will be back home on Tuesday, hosting IU Southeast at 7:30 p.m. on Lingle Court.
