Women's Golf: RSC Championships Day 1 Recap

DANIELS, W. Va. - Day one of the River States Conference Championships is over for the Indiana University East women's golf team.

The Red Wolves are right where they want to be as they lead the eight-team field after an opening round score of 327 at The Resort at Glade Springs on Sunday, April 21. Midway University is one shot back at 328, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods College is third at 336.

"Good battle out there today with the cool and breezy conditions on a challenging course," IU East Billy Mullin said. "I really like how we competed."

Individually, IU East's Brooklynn Cromwell is at the top of the leaderboard with a 78. Sophie Boyll of St. Mary-of-the-Woods is second at 80.

"As a team we put up some scores in the lower and mid-80s, which is acceptable for the first day," Cromwell said. "We all had a few off holes, but we managed to stay on the grind and finish it out."

"I hit my driver very well and my putter was definitely on my side today," Cromwell added. "I'm looking forward to another good day tomorrow and having some players move up the board."

One of four IU East golfers in the top 10, Katie Craig finished with an 81 to tie for third.

"My driver was a bit off all day, but my chipping and putting on the back side kept me in it," Craig said. "I am very proud of this team. We all played well and put up a good first round score. We are all ready for round two."

The other scores for the Red Wolves were Liv Sanders (83, T8), Lainey Jackson (85, T10) and Jalyn Bruns (86, T14).

"Brooklynn played outstanding and did a good job of keeping her round on track," Mullin said. "It was also really nice to see Katie putting well again. She made a lot of good putts."

"I was very impressed with Liv bringing her round back competitively after a big number early," Mullin continued. "Lainey and JB battled all day. We are here to play 54 holes."

Monday's second round is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. IU East's tee times are Bruns (10:50 a.m.), Jackson (11 a.m.), Sanders (11:10 a.m.), Craig (11:20 a.m.) and Cromwell (11:30 a.m.).
